The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Florida Turbine Technologies, Inc. (FTT), a subsidiary of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions. The $124,503 firm fixed price contract funds the development of electrically driven liquid oxygen and liquid methane pumps for a highly configurable modular rocket engine. This technology aims to dramatically reduce the cost of developing and producing nano/micro launch propulsion stages. The modular engine will use an array of digitally controlled electric pump-fed thruster modules, eliminating the need for propellant mixture ratio control valves, gimbals, and bellows. This effort aligns with NASA's goals to enable affordable access to space through innovative propulsion technologies.
