The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $124,978 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to Skyre, Inc., a small disadvantaged business, to develop a proof-of-concept solid-state electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) compressor for the Bifunctional Regenerative Electrochemical Air Transformation for Human Environments (BREATHE) system. The BREATHE system is part of the atmosphere revitalization equipment necessary to maintain a livable environment in crewed spacecraft. Skyre's novel solid-state technology, with no moving parts, is designed to be lightweight, efficient, and scalable for compressing CO2 as well as other logistically important gases like oxygen and hydrogen. The Phase I objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of this technical approach.
