Solid Material Solutions LLC, doing business as Ottotech, was awarded a $122,421.00 firm fixed price contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to research and develop high temperature superconducting magnets for adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators (ADRs). This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract aims to create a compact, low-current coil using a novel, fine 2212 superconductor wire that can operate at higher temperatures compared to current state-of-the-art ADR coils. The innovation includes designing, fabricating, and testing a prototype 2212 wire coil that can generate over 4 Tesla of magnetic field while operating at up to 25 Kelvin, exceeding NASA's technical specifications. This contract supports the development of ADR cooling technologies with fewer moving parts and higher efficiency for potential use in space-based scientific instruments.
