Amethyst Research Inc., a small business, was awarded a $124,999 firm fixed price contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to develop a high-performance, solid-state, vibration-free cryogenic cooler based on the Ettingshausen effect for space-based applications. This Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract aims to demonstrate the materials properties and design required to achieve more than 0.2-0.3 watts of cooling power in the 30-35 Kelvin temperature range, while consuming less than 5 watts of power. The advanced permanent magnet and semiconductor heterostructure technology proposed can produce a more compact and efficient cryogenic cooler compared to traditional Stirling or pulse tube refrigerators used in space applications.
