Fibertek, Inc. was awarded a $124,647 firm-fixed-price Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to enhance their existing compact optical communications terminal with quantum key distribution (QKD) capabilities. This system could enable secure communication with unmanned aerial systems (UAS) or between ground locations without the need for a dedicated fiber-optic connection. The contract tasks Fibertek to develop novel techniques to increase the QKD key transfer rate and simplify the hardware. As a small business, Fibertek has experience providing laser systems, sensors, and other specialized technology products and services to the Department of Defense, NASA, and other federal agencies under prime and subcontracts.
