- This is a $199,989.05 cooperative agreement awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) to develop and operate the first moderate resolution coastal ecosystem and ocean color CubeSat. The primary scientific goal is to generate multispectral imaging products to monitor coastal wetlands, estuarine water quality, and near-coastal ocean productivity, in support of NASA's...
- This is a $436,786.01 grant for research awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. The grant is part of NASA's Precipitation Measurement Missions (PMM) program and will fund research on the energy-water-food nexus in the context of urbanization. The research aims to develop precipitation-based metrics and frameworks for analyzing the implications of urban agriculture on water and energy...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $343,807 grant to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) to conduct research on transport processes in the Labrador Sea. This research aims to quantify the relative importance of different mechanisms driving the offshore export of meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet, and how this may influence stratification and climate dynamics in the region. The grant does not have a set-aside...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $526,922.63 grant to the University of Montana to support the maintenance and enhancement of the MOD17 algorithm, which produces global datasets on daily gross primary production and annual net primary production from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellite platforms. The MOD17 products are the only standard global 1-kilometer datasets of these key carbon flux metrics, and are critical inputs for climate and vegetation growth models as...
- This contract award to Georgia Tech Research Corporation, also known as the Office of Sponsored Programs, is a $446,552 grant for research from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center. The research aims to develop innovative approaches to detect shallow groundwater and irrigation using data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission, in order to improve the accuracy of Earth system models in simulating water, energy, and carbon...
- This $1,040,595 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center to the University of Maryland, College Park will fund the development and testing of an Aquatic Ecosystem Carbon Monitoring System. The goal of the project is to integrate NASA remote sensing data, in situ measurements, and process-based modeling to monitor major organic carbon fluxes and stocks of inland waters through November 2024. The University of Maryland will serve as the prime...
- This federal contract award, valued at $547,142.00, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Old Dominion University Research Foundation (ODURF) to develop software tools for extracting and mapping seagrass distribution and biomass from satellite imagery. The goal is to improve the quantification of blue carbon sequestration in seagrass ecosystems, which play a disproportionately important role in carbon burial compared to their spatial extent. The project...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration awarded a $38,399.97 cooperative agreement to the University of Utah's Office of Sponsored Projects Division. The agreement supports research to improve understanding of the feedbacks associated with climate change in northern boreal forests. Specifically, the university will establish a quantitative framework linking surface measurements of solar induced fluorescence and vegetation reflectance to estimates of gross primary productivity at...
- This federal contract was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) on September 1, 2018. The $135,000.00 training grant seeks to improve estimates of oceanic net primary production (NPP) by assimilating global-scale in-situ oceanographic tracer data with satellite-based observations. The proposed work aims to produce biogeochemically-consistent NPP estimates that can support NASA Earth science...
- This is a $1,122,173.00 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the Old Dominion University Research Foundation (ODURF) for a research project on "blue carbon" sequestration in submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) ecosystems. The project will monitor the distribution and abundance of SAV in the Chesapeake Bay region using remote sensing, and link these measurements to blue carbon burial rates. The research aims to improve understanding of how...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center awarded a $994,731.60 grant to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. to develop a novel Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer gross primary productivity product for estimating blue carbon across the Southeastern United States. The product will use tidal and species-based models adapted from 500-meter tide-indexed MODIS daily surface reflectance data to generate regional maps of MODIS-derived plant gross primary productivity spanning 2000 to 2020. The work will improve estimates of marsh surface flooding, adapt new spectral biophysical indices, and measure plant-level productivity to account for tidal influences not captured by eddy covariance towers. The resulting tools and analyses will help coastal managers assess restoration needs and trajectories for critical coastal ecosystems. No set-aside designation was used.
