- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $210,300.80 grant to the University of Montana to investigate the response of seasonal phenology, carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange, and atmospheric CO2 to spring warming, soil thaw, and liquid water availability in North America. The research project, which does not have a set-aside designation, will leverage multi-scale carbon and water cycle observations, as well as land and atmosphere models, to elucidate the impacts of...
- This is a $292,161 grant awarded by the Shared Services Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Montana for a research project titled "IMPROVING JOINT PREDICTIONS OF FOREST FLUXES AND FLAMMABILITY USING SATELLITE MICROWAVE DATA". The grant, which has a period of performance through May 31, 2027, is focused on improving the joint prediction of forest fluxes and flammability using satellite microwave data. The University of Montana, a...
- This federal contract award, valued at $103,278.86, was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Montana to conduct research on the impacts of climate change on carbon release from forest disturbances in the western United States. The research project, which runs from September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2018, aims to investigate the resistance and resilience of forests to changes in disturbance regimes, such as fire, drought, and insects, and how these...
- This federal contract award, valued at $478,214.00, was granted by the Shared Services Center to the University of Montana to provide continuity for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MOD17 Land Gross Primary Production, Net Primary Production, and MOD16 Evapotranspiration datasets on the Terra and Aqua satellites. The contract is a grant for research, with a period of performance through September 30, 2025. The University of Montana, operating as Research and Sponsored...
- The University of Montana in Missoula, MT was awarded a $1,814,517.00 grant (Contract #80NSSC18K0980) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to extend and enhance an existing Earth System Data Record (ESDR) that quantifies daily landscape freeze/thaw (FT) state dynamics over global land areas. The proposed work will leverage satellite microwave brightness temperature observations to provide a continuous 40-year FT data record, with increased spatial resolution and...
- The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $299,654 grant to the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) to maintain and extend the daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) albedo, nadir reflectance, and surface anisotropy products through the end of the Aqua and Terra satellite records. These high-quality MODIS products have been used extensively by the modeling and monitoring communities over the past 16 years to improve understanding of...
- This federal contract award was granted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of Montana for a research project focused on modeling the likelihood of recruitment failure in semi-arid forests of the western United States. The $688,998.06 grant will support the integration of earth observation data, in-situ data, and a coupled ecohydrologic/plant hydraulics model to simulate indicators of seedling mortality, such as loss of hydraulic...
- The University of Montana, located in Missoula, Montana, was awarded a Cooperative Agreement worth $581,645.26 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to develop data products that improve understanding of ecosystem dynamics using remote sensing data collected during a 2017 airborne campaign. The project will quantify permafrost active layer patterns, seasonal variations, and recent trends across Alaska and Northwest Canada. The University will develop new remote sensing...
- This is a $149,504.00 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the University of Montana (UMT) to investigate the effect of Earth's 3D structure on load-induced surface displacement. The award has a period of performance ending on July 28, 2027. UMT, a public research university, will leverage its expertise in environmental monitoring, ecological studies, and scientific research to support this NASA-funded project. The contract has no...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $526,922.63 grant to the University of Montana to support the maintenance and enhancement of the MOD17 algorithm, which produces global datasets on daily gross primary production and annual net primary production from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellite platforms. The MOD17 products are the only standard global 1-kilometer datasets of these key carbon flux metrics, and are critical inputs for climate and vegetation growth models as well as analyses of land disturbance, biodiversity, and bioenergy. The grant will fund activities to recalibrate the algorithm in response to changes in the input meteorological data and land cover definitions, improve the processing efficiency by leveraging climatology data, and provide technical support and user community engagement. This award is not associated with a set-aside designation. The University of Montana, a public research institution, is the prime recipient for this NASA research grant.
