This is a $749,927.87 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York. The grant supports a research project to 1) develop remote sensing methods to monitor forest degradation and regeneration in tropical deciduous forests of South Asia, and 2) assess how off-farm employment associated with urbanization alters the use of forest resources that leads to degradation. The project will focus on a study region in central India, a globally important landscape for tiger conservation. The goal is to establish an operational monitoring system maintained by Indian scientists to enable targeting efforts to reduce forest degradation and monitor progress towards reforestation goals. The grant does not have a set-aside designation and was awarded on April 1, 2017, with a completion date of March 31, 2022.
