This federal contract award to Trustees of Boston University supports the Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission, a joint mission between the European Space Agency and China Academy of Sciences. The $181,733 grant contract, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), funds Boston University's investigations of X-ray optical elements and scientific modeling and analysis for the SMILE mission. The SMILE mission employs proven soft X-ray and ultraviolet imager technologies to study key heliophysics problems related to the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction, as identified in the Decadal Survey. This self-standing mission does not require observations from other sources to achieve its scientific goals, but will provide global observations to unify magnetospheric physics research. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.
