This $774,187 research grant was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to The Pennsylvania State University, doing business as Penn State, to develop and characterize depleted p-channel field effect transistor (DEPFET) X-ray detectors. The goal is to advance the maturity of this detector technology to support proposed future X-ray astronomy missions such as ATHENA, BepiColombo, IXPE, LYNX, and ARCUS. The grant will allow Penn State to acquire DEPFET detectors from the German company pnSensor, build a test stand to operate the detectors, and independently characterize their performance for X-ray applications. This work will inform the next design iterations and optimization of DEPFET detectors for upcoming NASA-led X-ray missions. The contract does not have a set-aside designation and will be completed by January 17, 2024.
