This is a grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Oregon State University (OSU) to quantify the rates and nature of aeolian (wind-driven) transport in the Argentinean Puna region as an analog for understanding aeolian processes on Mars. The $314,651.01 grant, awarded on September 27, 2017, will support a research project that builds upon previous characterization and semi-quantitative work on gravel-capped bedforms in the Puna region. The goal is to more rigorously quantify the morphology of these bedforms and the wind characteristics responsible for their formation, which were not addressed in prior studies. This research is expected to provide insights applicable to the study of transverse aeolian ridges and megaripples observed on the surface of Mars. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.
