The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $542,866.68 grant to the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on April 8, 2019 to develop a compact monitoring station for long-term observation of the lunar exosphere. This effort addresses NASA's Directed Augmentation for Lunar Innovations (DALI) program objective of maturing spacecraft-based instruments with promise for future lunar missions. The proposed monitoring station will use a neutral mass spectrometer, seismometer, and other sensors to autonomously collect and relay measurements of changes in the lunar exosphere's composition over a 2-year period. This grant does not have a set-aside designation. UMBC, a public research university, will lead this development, which builds upon its prior experience providing research, measurement, and analytical services to support NASA programs in areas like Earth science, astrophysics, and space technologies. The University System of Maryland, of which UMBC is a member, has also received federal contract awards and grants for telecommunications infrastructure, research and development, and academic initiatives.
