This is a grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to Michigan State University (MSU) to develop a 30 m weekly burned area product by combining data from the Landsat-8, Sentinel-2A, and Sentinel-2B satellites. The $1,063,138.97 grant will fund the development and validation of an algorithm that uses a random forest change regression model and temporal consistency checks to differentiate between burned areas and spectrally similar nonfire surface changes. The product will cover all of Africa south of the Tropic of Cancer. No set-aside designation was used for this award. As a top research university, MSU has expertise providing research and development services to federal agencies, including supporting reliability of electronics for NASA's space exploration missions.
