This is a $465,781.42 research grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) to study small-scale magnetic flux ropes in the solar wind. The objective is to better understand the properties and origins of these structures and their impact on space plasma processes and particle energization. The grant will utilize data from various spacecraft including ACE, WIND, STEREO, ULYSSES, CLUSTER, THEMIS, HELIOS, DSCOVR, MMS, Parker Solar Probe, and Solar Orbiter. Analysis techniques will include the Grad-Shafranov reconstruction method to identify and characterize the flux ropes. The research aims to advance knowledge relevant to two high-level goals from the National Academies' Decadal Survey: determining the origins of solar activity and predicting space environment variations, and discovering fundamental processes in the heliosphere and beyond. This is not a set-aside contract, and there are no major subcontractors mentioned.
