This is a $749,927.87 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York. The grant supports a research project to 1) develop remote sensing methods to monitor forest degradation and regeneration in tropical deciduous forests of South Asia, and 2) assess how off-farm employment associated with urbanization alters the use of forest resources that leads to degradation. The project will focus on a study region...
The U.S. government awarded a $1,056,512.00 grant contract to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), a non-profit organization doing business as the Bronx Zoo Wildlife Conservation Park, to develop a near-real time integrated mapping and reporting system for re-wilding efforts. The system will be an extension and enhancement of an existing application for tigers (Panthera tigris) to also support lions (Panthera leo), jaguars (Panthera onca), and American bison (Bison bison). The contract,...
This is a $369,179 grant awarded to the Wildlife Management Institute, Incorporated (doing business as Wildlife Management Institute Inc.), a non-profit organization based in Cabot, Vermont. The grant was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for a project titled "Wildlife Conservation Agencies and NASA Earth Observation Data: A Needs Assessment Analysis for Using NASA Data to Conserve Biodiversity and Facilitate Landscape Conservation." The project aims...
This federal contract award to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will support efforts to enhance connectivity between natural areas and enable species to adapt to climate change. The $631,307 grant will fund the development of improved topoclimate and connectivity analysis tools using NASA Earth observation data. This work will expand TNC's "Conserving Nature's Stage" initiative, which helps identify climate-resilient sites for...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $550,144.25 grant to the Conservation International Foundation, a non-profit organization, to strengthen the technical capacities of indigenous organizations in the Americas to utilize earth observation (EO) data for enhanced sustainable land management across indigenous lands. The project aligns with the ongoing Group on Earth Observations (GEO) AmeriGEOSS initiative to increase regional capacity for sustainable land use...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $575,281.18 grant to Yale University on February 14, 2018 to advance the use of remote sensing data for species distribution and abundance modeling. The grant does not have a set-aside designation. The work will leverage existing projects and partnerships to improve inventory datasets, enhance modeling methods, and deliver spatial and spatio-temporal Essential Biodiversity Variable (EBV) products for species in North America,...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has awarded a $304,000.00 grant to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for the "Drifting Fish Aggregating Device (DFAD) Trajectory Modeling Tool for Marine Protected Area Management" project. This research grant, which does not have a set-aside designation, will support the development of a modeling tool to assist in the management of marine protected areas. TNC, a non-profit environmental organization, has a long history of...
This is a $88,551.62 grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York, doing business as the Health Sciences Division, to map improved mangrove forest extent in the West Africa region and changes in mangrove extent for 2 case study areas in Africa and 1 in Southeast Asia. The grant will utilize high-resolution optical satellite data from Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2, as well as microwave satellite data from...
This $850,647.00 grant was awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Montana State University to develop and implement a decision support system (DSS) for scenario planning, forecasting, policy development, and reporting related to Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15) - Life on Land. The project aims to assist Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru in meeting the Convention on Biodiversity 2020 targets by integrating Earth observation data and biological data to produce...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $619,840 grant to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) through its Office of Research Administration. This grant is for research investigating how the movements of seed-dispersing animals, such as birds, bats, primates, and antelopes, are influenced by the structure and phenology of rainforest vegetation in the Congo Basin. By leveraging NASA satellite data on vegetation 3D structure, phenology, and canopy...
This is a $708,930.05 federal grant awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in November 2018. The grant supports research to advance the use of NASA Earth observation data, climate data, and ecological models to help countries report on Sustainable Development Goal 15 (Life on Land).
Specifically, the project aims to develop, test, and demonstrate to governments a near-real time integrated mapping and reporting system that produces regional results about sites important for biodiversity, using tigers as an example. The system will compute and analyze tiger conservation landscapes and source sites over time, in relation to protected areas and human footprint, and make the data available through a web portal. The project will also compute annual global human footprint maps at 1 km2 resolution. This research is expected to provide a working example of fusing NASA data with conservation efforts to track endangered species as the climate changes.
