STATEMENT OF WORK FEATURE ANALYSIS FOR CLASSIFICATION OF FISH IN UNDERWATER IMAGE SEQUENCES BACKGROUND: UNDERWATER VIDEO IS A TOOL USED BY MANY PROGRAMS WITHIN THE NATIONAL MARINE FISHERIES SERVICE (NMFS) WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF IDENTIFYING AND QUANTIFYING LIVING MARINE RESOURCES NEAR THE SEA BED. AT THE SOUTHEAST FISHERIES SCIENCE CENTER (SEFSC), INDICES OF REEF FISH ABUNDANCE DEVELOPED FROM AN ANNUAL SURVEY USING UNDERWATER CAMERAS ARE USED FOR STOCK ASSESSMENT. HOWEVER, REVIEW OF RECORDINGS BY HUMAN ANALYSTS TO COUNT FISH AND IDENTIFY SPECIES IS LABOR INTENSIVE. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP COMPUTER METHODS TO AUTOMATICALLY IDENTIFY, TO THE LOWEST POSSIBLE TAXONOMIC LEVEL, FISH WHICH HAVE BEEN DETECTED IN IMAGE SEQUENCES. CURRENTLY ANALYSTS REVIEW IMAGE SEQUENCES FOR THE PRESENCE OF FISH FROM A LIST OF SPECIES. FOR THE POTENTIAL NUMBER OF SPECIES ENCOUNTERED IN A TYPICAL SURVEY, AUTOMATION OF THIS PROCESS IS A VERY COMPLEX PROBLEM. TO MAKE THE PROBLEM TRACTABLE, THE INITIAL RESEARCH WILL BE TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF BINARY CLASSIFIERS THAT CAN BE COMBINED EVENTUALLY INTO A CLASSIFICATION TREE. BY BUILDING BINARY CLASSIFIERS WHICH CAN BE COMBINED IN A MODULAR FASHION, IT WON T BE NECESSARY TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO CLASSIFY ALL FISH BEFORE AUTOMATION BENEFITS ARE REALIZED. AMONG ALL THE FISH THAT ARE DETECTED AND TRACKED, THOSE FOR WHICH SUCCESSFUL CLASSIFIERS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED CAN BE COUNTED AUTOMATICALLY WHILE ANALYSTS CONTINUE TO IDENTIFY AND COUNT OTHER SPECIES. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE TO DEVELOP CLASSIFIERS FOR A SUBSET OF SPECIES OR FAMILIES ENCOUNTERED BY REEF FISH SURVEYS IN THE GULF OF MEXICO. THE EFFORT WILL FOCUS ON BUILDING CLASSIFIERS FOR SPECIES HAVING RELATIVELY DISTINCTIVE APPEARANCE THAT WILL RELIEVE SOME OF THE BURDEN NOW ON MANUAL ANALYSTS WHILE ALSO PROVIDING INSIGHT INTO WHAT IMAGE FEATURES WILL BE USEFUL IN THE FUTURE FOR CLASSIFICATION OF MORE DIFFICULT SPECIES. TASKS: 1) REVIEW SEQUENCES OF UNDERWATER IMAGES AND SELECT FISH SPECIES (OR FAMILIES) TO CLASSIFY 2) SELECT FEATURES TO BE USED IN CLASSIFICATION 3) TRANSITION EXISTING ALGORITHMS TO SELECT FISH IMAGES AND TRACKING RESULTS TO GENERATE INPUT FOR CLASSIFIERS 4) EXAMINE TECHNIQUES OF CLASSIFICATION AND SELECT THE MOST APPROPRIATE FOR EACH SPECIES 5) DEVELOP AUTOMATED BINARY CLASSIFIERS FOR EACH SELECTED SPECIES, USING INFORMATION FROM EXPERTS ON VISUAL FISH CLASSIFICATION 6) VALIDATE ALL ALGORITHMS AGAINST EXPERT HUMAN CLASSIFICATION. THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT, FEEDBACK AND GUIDANCE WILL BE SOUGHT FROM NMFS EXPERTS. DELIVERABLE: 1. THE CONTRACTOR WILL PROVIDE THREE (3) COPIES OF COMPUTER SOURCE CODE FOR ALL ALGORITHMS DEVELOPED DURING THE PROJECT TO ANALYZE IMAGES AND CLASSIFY FISH SPECIES IN IMAGE SEQUENCES. 2. PROGRESS REPORTS WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE END OF EACH FISCAL YEAR (SEPTEMBER 2010, SEPTEMBER 2011). THESE REPORTS WILL BE PROVIDED ON CD-ROM ALONG WITH ONE (1) HARD PAPER COPY. 3. A FINAL PROJECT REPORT SHALL BE PROVIDED AT COMPLETION OF THE WORK DETAILING PROJECT RESULTS. THIS REPORT SHALL BE PROVIDED ON CD-ROM ALONG WITH TWO (2) HARD PAPER COPIES. PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: THE PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE SHALL BE THE DATE OF THIS TASK ORDER AND CONTINUE THROUGH TWO (2) YEARS.
