This federal contract award is for the continued development of the Strut Attachment System (SAS) by Honeybee Robotics, Ltd., doing business as Honeybee Robotics Craft Mechanisms. The SAS is a robotic system designed to enable the on-orbit assembly, repair, and upgrade of large space structures, which is critical as missions move further from low-Earth orbit where human extravehicular activity becomes increasingly dangerous.
The $725,608.00 Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract, awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), aims to advance the SAS to Technology Readiness Level 4. This includes further development of the strut attachment mechanism, strut receptacle, as well as the embedded systems for a self-healing power and communications network. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate a networked space frame structure assembled robotically with the ability to support payload docking and power/data transfer. This work supports NASA's space exploration objectives by enabling more capable, reusable, and cost-effective space systems.
