This federal contract award is for the development of a novel nonlinear Raman spectral sensing instrument for trace organic detection at the sub-parts-per-million (sub-PPM) level. The instrument is intended to address a significant technology gap for NASA astrobiology missions in the field detection of organics. The $749,978 Firm Fixed Price contract was awarded to Crystal Research Inc., a small business, under the SBIR Program Phase II. It is intended to provide NASA with an ultra-sensitive, deployable instrument suitable for in-situ measurements on robotic missions, particularly the upcoming Mars 2020 mission which is focused on sample collection for return. The contract is set aside for small businesses.
