Mercury Mission Systems LLC, a subsidiary of Mercury Systems Inc., has been awarded a $2 million definitive cost-plus-fixed-fee contract by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to develop an advanced non-invasive, autonomous underwater 3D X-ray mine inspection system (XMIN). The contract is being carried out under Phase III of the Small Business Innovation Research program. Work will be performed in Torrance, California over a two-year period through January 2024.

The contract award is in response to ONR's Magnetic and Acoustic Generation Next Unmanned Superconducting Sweep solicitation to develop an advanced minesweeping payload for transition to the Naval Sea Systems Command's Mine Countermeasure Unmanned Surface Vehicle program. Specifically, Mercury Mission Systems will develop, fabricate, integrate and demonstrate a high-temperature superconducting magnetic source and advanced acoustic generator payload for unmanned detection and removal of sea mines from 2022-2024. No subcontractors or set aside designations were indicated.
