The University of Pittsburgh - Of The Commonwealth System of Higher Education, doing business as The University of Pittsburgh, was awarded a $337,673 definitive contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop and demonstrate multi-functional millimeter to centimeter scale robotic platforms with a focus on untethered mobility, maneuverability, and dexterity. This effort, called the DARPA Short-Range Independent Microrobotic Platforms (SHRIMP) program, will also provide foundational research in micro-actuator materials and energy efficient power systems for extremely size, weight, and power (SWaP) constrained microrobotic systems. The contract has a period of performance through May 2020 and does not have a set-aside designation. This contract is part of a larger DARPA research and development effort focused on advancing foundational capabilities in microrobotics, which could enable future applications including search and rescue, disaster relief, hazardous environment inspection, aerodynamic control, steerable optics, and prosthetics.
