The Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy awarded a $2.15 million firm fixed price definitive contract to Upshots LLC for the production of mixed rare earth oxides from coal-based resources. The contract is in response to a solicitation from the National Energy Technology Laboratory seeking proposals to develop processes for extracting rare earth elements from coal and coal by-products in an environmentally sound manner at bench and engineering scales. Work will be conducted at the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Forsyth, Georgia from October 2020 through July 2021 to validate the capability of producing a minimum of 300 parts per million of total rare earth elements from coal-based feedstocks. Upshots LLC will leverage its experience in extracting, separating, purifying and marketing minerals and metals. The contract furthers the Department of Energy's research objectives in developing domestic rare earth element supplies to meet national energy needs.
