The University of North Dakota Division of Research and Economic Development has been awarded a $2.45 million firm fixed price definitive contract by the Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy to produce mixed rare earth oxides from coal-based resources. The contract aims to support DOE's mission of developing rare earth element extraction, concentration, separation, and metallization capabilities from domestic coal resources. Major subcontractors include Envergex, LLC to develop heat and material balance models, Rare Earth Salts Separations and Refining LLC, Microbeam Technologies Incorporated, and Barr Engineering Co. The work will be performed in Grand Forks, North Dakota through January 2022.
