The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded a $749,898.00 Small Business Innovation Research (STTR) Phase II contract to Fibertek, Inc. to develop a state-of-the-art, space-qualified laser transmitter for a flash LIDAR system. The contract aims to significantly reduce the size, weight, and increase the efficiency of the laser transmitter compared to the previous design used in the Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) demonstrator program. Key innovations include incorporating additive manufacturing techniques, an ultra-compact ring resonator design, and more efficient diode-pumped laser head and electronics. The contract has a period of performance through June 30, 2020 and is a firm fixed-price arrangement.
