This is a USD 124,751 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to ATA Engineering, Inc., a small business based in San Diego, California. The contract is focused on developing novel aerodynamic devices to improve the efficiency of small-core turbines for future subsonic transport aircraft. Key objectives include mitigating losses from tip leakage and secondary flows in these turbines, while accounting for their...
This federal contract was awarded by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Research Laboratory to Jetoptera Inc., a small disadvantaged business. The $149,337.00 contract is for the Experimental Study of the Lift Augmentation Potential Performance of Fluidic Propulsion for Advanced Air Mobility--The Upper Surface Blown Wing, under a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I award. Jetoptera, an aviation startup developing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), vertical take-off...
This is a firm fixed-price $124,913 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to Launchpoint Technologies, Inc., doing business as Magnetic Moments. The contract is for the design, build, and testing of a magnetic transmission system to optimize the integration of high-speed electric motors and efficient propellers for use on electric or hybrid-electric aircraft. The proposed magnetic transmission aims to...
NASA has awarded a $540,000.00 Firm Fixed Price contract to Research In Flight LLC, a small business aerospace engineering company, to develop tools and methods for assessing the stability and control characteristics of unconventional aircraft configurations during the conceptual design phase. The contract supports NASA's continued investigation into advanced aircraft designs, such as blended wing bodies and distributed electric propulsion, which offer potential benefits in fuel efficiency and...
This is a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I contract awarded by the Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Research Laboratory to Research In Flight LLC, a small aerospace engineering company. The $150,000.00 firm fixed-price contract is for the "Improvement of Multi-Rotor Aerial Vehicles Performance Using Reduced-Order Aero-Mechanical Models." The contract, which has a total small business set-aside, is focused on...
This SBIR Phase I contract, awarded by NASA to Research In Flight LLC, a small business, aims to develop an automated approach for engine integration using the company's proprietary aerodynamics analysis tool, FlightStream. FlightStream is a lower-order, high-fidelity solver that can accurately predict aerodynamic loads on a range of aircraft configurations, including high-lift designs. The $123,473 fixed-price contract will integrate FlightStream with optimization tools, engine performance...
This federal contract award to Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, a subsidiary of The Boeing Company, is for the development of an actively twisted compliant wing architecture for blended wing body (BWB) aircraft. The goal is to mitigate stall concerns and improve the aerodynamic efficiency of these platforms, which typically suffer from stability issues due to the lack of a conventional tail surface. The $124,806 Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Phase I contract, awarded by the Shared...

RESEARCH OVER PAST SEVERAL DECADES HAS SHOWN THAT IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE SIGNIFICANT ROTOR PERFORMANCE INCREASE, IT MUST ACTIVELY ADAPT, OR MORPH, TO THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT AROUND THE AZIMUTH. SEVERAL ACTIVE ROTOR BLADE SURFACES HAVE BEEN PROPOSED, INCLUDING TRAILING EDGE FLAPS, MINIATURE TRAILING EDGE EFFECTORS (MITES), AND LEADING EDGE SLATS. SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTING SURFACE ACTUATION WITH TRADITIONAL MOTORS ARE THE EXISTENCE OF EXTREMELY LARGE CENTRIFUGAL FORCES AND THE NEGATIVE INERTIAL EFFECTS OF INSTALLING RELATIVELY HEAVY ACTUATORS OUTBOARD ON THE BLADES. IT WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS TO UTILIZE THE LARGE CENTRIPETAL ACCELERATION CREATED BY THE ROTOR TO GENERATE AN ON-BLADE AIR PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL FOR ACTUATION, THUS ELIMINATING BOTH THE NEED TO TRANSMIT HIGH AMOUNTS OF ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE ROTATING FRAME AND THE NEED FOR HEAVY, TRADITIONAL ACTUATORS THAT CAN NEGATIVELY IMPACT ROTOR PERFORMANCE.
