1A. CATEGORIES OF ELIGIBILITY: 1. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IMPACT. 2. STEM CAREERS EXPLORATION. AND 3. POTENTIAL TO BUILD PROGRAM CAPACITY. 1.B. BULLETED POINTS: * MISSION: GIRLSTART'S MISSION IS TO EMPOWER AND EQUIP GIRLS IN STEM. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS MISSION BY DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE MODELS AND PROCESSES FOR TEACHING STEM, EMPOWERING GIRLS TO ACHIEVE IN STEM EDUCATION AND PURSUE STEM CAREERS, THEREBY FEEDING THE NATIONAL STEM WORKFORCE. GIRLSTART PROVIDES SOUND, EFFECTIVE AND VANGUARD PROGRAMMING FOR GIRLS IN AND OUT OF THE SCHOOL DAY THAT DIRECTLY REACH GIRLS, BUT ALSO INFORM TEACHERS AND FAMILIES AS THEY SEEK TO IDENTIFY WAYS TO ENGAGE GIRLS IN STEM SUBJECTS AND CAREERS. OUR PROGRAMS TAKE PLACE YEAR-ROUND AT SCHOOLS, AT OUR GIRLSTART SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY CENTER, AND/OR AT COMMUNITY PARTNER LOCATIONS. IN THIS PROPOSAL, GIRLSTART REQUESTS A PLANNING GRANT FROM NASA TO EXPAND ITS SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM, NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR. * PROGRAM: GIRLSTART TO GO: GIRLSTART SUMMER CAMP * ORGANIZATION: GIRLSTART * YEAR ESTABLISHED: 1999 * GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION: CENTRAL TEXAS * PARTICIPANTS: GIRLS K-12 (PARTICULARLY MIDDLE SCHOOL). IN THE MAIN, WE PROVIDE PROGRAMS TO GIRLS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. WHILE GIRLS ARE THEMSELVES AN 'UNDERREPRESENTED' CATEGORY IN STEM MAJORS AND PROFESSIONS (NOTED BY THE CAN IN APPX. F), WE ALSO REACH A HIGH PROPORTION OF GIRLS LIVING IN LOW-INCOME ENVIRONMENTS, AS WELL AS GIRLS WHO ARE LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENT. IN ADDITION, GIRLSTART'S PROGRAMS PRIMARILY REACH RACIAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS (ESPECIALLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND LATINO) THAT ARE UNDERREPRESENTED IN STEM MAJORS AND PROFESSIONS. * #YOUTH I ANNUALLY: 2010'S SUMMER CAMP: 595. GIRLSTART IN TOTAL: 2,500+ * #YOUTH I TO DATE: SUMMER CAMP: 2,000+. GIRLSTART: 21,000+ * STUDENT-TO-STAFFRATIO: MAX 5:1 * THEME: A FULL SPECTRUM OF STEM TOPICS IN WEEK-LONG, 40+ HR I WK CAMPS (E.G., 'STELLAR STARS') * PARTNERS: BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS; SCHOOL DISTRICTS; UT-AUSTIN (ESP UTEACH); COLUMBIA COLI CHICAGO; RUTGERS U; U OF COLORADO; TEXAS A & M; COLUMBIA TEACHERS COIL (NYC); MIT MEDIA LAB; SCIGIRLS; STEM PROFESSIONALS. L.C. DESCRIPTION OF CURRENT PROGRAM: GIRLSTART SUMMER CAMPS ARE WEEK-LONG PROGRAMS FOR 4TH THROUGH 8TH GRADE GIRLS IN JUNE, JULY, AND AUGUST OF EACH YEAR DESIGNED TO INCREASE CONFIDENCE AND INTEREST IN STEM. THIS MAKES STEM FUN AND ACCESSIBLE TO GIRLS OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS. EACH CAMP PROVIDES 40 HRS OF PROGRAM PER WEEK (M-F, 8-5). IN 2009, WE DELIVERED 8 WEEKS OF SUMMER CAMP, ALL AT GIRLSTART. IN 2010, WE ARE DELIVERING 14 WEEKS OF SUMMER CAMP PLUS EXPANDED OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME CAMPS. L.D. ALIGNMENT OF PROPOSED WORK WITH SOLICITATION: GIRLSTART'S SUMMER PROGRAM EVALUATION SHOWS A CORRELATION BETWEEN PROGRAM PARTICIPATION AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. GIRLSTART'S SUMMER CAMP IS ALREADY A MODEL PROGRAM FOR DELIVERING STEM CONTENT TO A DIVERSE GROUP OF MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY GIRLS. GIRLSTART'S SUMMER CAMP HAS A DEMONSTRATED TRACK RECORD IN FOSTERING GREATER KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS OF STEM CAREERS. AFTER OUR SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM, MORE THAN 93% OF PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS DEMONSTRATE A GREATER AWARENESS OF THE RANGE OF STEM CAREERS AFTER OUR SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM; MORE THAN 97% REPORT GREATER AWARENESS OFTHE STEPS TO STEM CAREERS. GIRLSTART'S SUMMER CAMP IS ALSO CURRENTLY DEMONSTRATING THE POTENTIAL TO BUILD PROGRAM CAPACITY. FURTHER, OUR SUMMER CAMP MODEL INCLUDES SIGNIFICANT REPRESENTATION AMONG UNDERREPRESENTED (MINORITY) STUDENTS AS WELL AS UNDERSERVED (FEMALE AND MINORITY) STUDENTS. LIKE NASA'S OWN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM PRINCIPLES, GIRLSTART REFLECTS AUSTIN'S DIVERSE NEIGHBORHOODS, AND VALUES THE DIVERSITY OF MANY VOICES. THE GIRLSTART METHOD STRESSES THE IMPORTANCE OF LISTENING TO INDIVIDUAL VOICES AND IDEAS; WE IMPLEMENT THIS AS A PART OF EVERYTHING WE DO. IN BRIEF, WE BELIEVE THAT GIRLSTART SUMMER CAMP NOT ONLY HAS THE SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FOR PROGRAM EXPANSION, BUT THAT OUR PROGRAMS ARE AN ABSOLUTE MATCH WITH NASA'S PRIORITIES FOR THIS PROGRAM.
