This is a $95,067.64 cooperative agreement awarded by NASA to the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) to test alternative localization and communication hardware for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The goal is to enhance connectivity between UAVs and reduce the risk of collision, especially in urban environments with degraded GPS signals. The project will investigate the use of short-range, high-bandwidth wireless transceivers like ultra-wideband (UWB) to enable UAV-to-UAV communication, relative positioning, and communication back to a ground station. UCSC will construct the UAVs and conduct testing in a motion capture environment. This contract does not have a set-aside designation, reflecting UCSC's status as a large research institution. As a University of California campus, UCSC frequently supports NASA and other federal agencies through contract and grant awards across a range of scientific and technical disciplines.
