About The Whitney Institute
The Whitney Institute, legally known as Whitney Plantation, is a non-profit museum dedicated to educating the public about the history and legacies of slavery in the United States. Through exhibits, tours, and staff-led conversations, the Institute preserves and shares the experiences of enslaved individuals. As a recipient of federal grant awards, The Whitney Institute has secured funding to support its mission of presenting the history of slavery from the perspective of the enslaved. These grants have enabled the Institute to enhance its educational initiatives, exhibitions, and preservation efforts related to African American experiences and the history of slavery in the United States. The Institute's work aligns with federal government objectives to preserve and promote understanding of historically significant sites and narratives, particularly those related to underrepresented communities.
Through its federal grant awards, The Whitney Institute has undertaken a diverse range of projects. The National Park Service awarded a $70,400 Project Grant to amend the National Register of Historic Places nomination for Whitney Plantation, addressing the previous exclusion of African Americans and reassessing the site's role in slavery's history. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) provided two significant grants: a $101,800 Project Grant to expand educational outreach through virtual distance learning programs, community engagement activities, and an off-site "Museum in a Box" program; and a $576,027 grant to create an exhibition and programming on resistance and freedom-seeking in South Louisiana, collaborating with Cornell University, the University of New Orleans, and Freedom on the Move. As a sub-recipient, the Institute received grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to develop virtual tour experiences and curriculum materials for students and educators, addressing educational needs during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Additionally, a grant from the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism supported the creation of a comprehensive preservation plan and site documentation for Whitney Plantation's 17 historic structures, as well as community-based research and social media promotion of preservation activities.
