The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) / National Institute Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) intends to award a sole source contract to Thermo Environmental Instruments, Inc. for the procurement of ten (10) PDM 3700 personal dust monitors. One of the goals of the Dust, Ventilation, and Toxic Substances Branch is to reduce coal mine workers' exposure to respirable coal mine dust. As part of this research, it is necessary to quantify the respirable dust exposure of these workers and identify major sources of dust liberation in the mines. Mass based sampling instruments provide the most accurate measurement of these exposures. If these exposures can be monitored and recorded on a time basis, it allows researchers to identify the highest sources of dust exposure. Consequently, it is necessary to use respirable dust sampling instrumentation that is person-wearable, mass-based, records real time data, and is approved for use in underground mines. The PDM 3700 dust monitor is the only instrument that can perform the needed functions and is certified by both Mine Safety and health Administration (MSHA) and NIOSH for use in underground mining environments.
