The USDA, ARS, SEA has a requirement for a mass spectrometer system with a DART® (Direct Analysis in Real Time) ion source for use in Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis. This system is required for the determination of high resolution mass of compounds required for identification and structure elucidation of compounds, specially unknown compounds, either in pure form or in a mixture. The DART ion source allows immediate determination of chemical composition and produces high-resolution, accurate mass spectra by placing a sample in its native form between the DART ion source and the mass spectrometer inlet. The DART is capable of advanced time-of-flight mass spectrometer with the open air ion source. As no additional pumps, flanges, or interface hardware are required, this makes it possible to carry out unique ambient ionization experiments that are not practical on other mass spectrometers and produces clean, reproducible, easy-to-interpret data. This system is versatile - can be used for liquid and solid samples, and does not require derivatization of analytes. JEOL is the sole source of this type system that can satisfy all of the above criteria and meet the requirements of our research for quick, yet accurate chemical structure determination and for efficient work flow to discover compounds in various matrices obtained from a wide variety of natural sources (plants, microorganisms, animals).
