The National Park Service, East Contracting Office has a requirement to prepare a Historic Resource Study (HRS) for Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (CUGA, the Park), located in Bell and Harlan Counties, Kentucky; Claiborne County, Tennessee; and Lee County, Virginia. The HRS would be the first one produced for the Park and will account for changes to the Park since its establishment, incorporate additional scholarship, and update resource documentation for this core baseline document. The HRS will synthesize all available cultural resource information from all disciplines in a format designed to serve managers, planners, interpreters, cultural resource specialists, and the interested public as a reference for the history of the Park and its resources. The updated HRS will broaden the historic context of the Park to include current scholarship and include a comprehensive survey and assessment of all buildings, structures, objects, and historic sites within the Park, using the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria.
