Construct Prosthetic and Sensory Aid Center
The purpose of this minor construction project is to design and ultimately construct a new prosthetic and sensory aid center at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center located in Columbia, SC. This project will address the needs of VA patients and employees with a specialized program that is designed to provide prosthetic/orthotic services to the disabled veteran. The design developed will provide adequate direction for the complete construction of the rehabilitation facility.
This project will construct a building to address the 12,000 square feet of space gap. The project will also address 1,000 square feet of administrative gap, 1,500 square feet of support gap, and 2,000 square feet of common/swing/construction gap. The Prosthetic and Sensory Aid Service is a specialized program, designed to provide prosthetic/orthotic services to the disabled Veteran. Prosthetic services are distinguished as functions related to the replacement of missing parts of the body. Orthotic services are characterized as functions that support existing parts of the body. These services may include but not be limited to the procurement and fabrication of artificial limbs, aids to the blind, hearing aids, upper and lower extremities, orthotic devices, wheelchairs, orthopedic shoes, plastic eyes, cosmetic ears, noses or major facial restorations, eyeglasses, automobile adaptive equipment and major life support systems, i.e., environmental controls and home dialysis units.
A/E shall provide full and complete new construction design and specifications detailed in the Solicitation Documentation. Location of the structure shall be recommended by the A/E service with final approval by the VA. The rehabilitation facility is proposed to be located in the parking lot north of building 2. The A/E service will be responsible for determining a layout and arrangement. It is anticipated that the new construction will result in the addition of 14,500 GSF to the Columbia, SC VAMC Campus.
Value engineering is encouraged and shall be noted at each design review. The project will include but is not limited to new construction of a 14,500 GSF prosthetic and sensory aid center, HVAC and other utility work, interior finishes, utility coordination and site work. Design and construction shall adhere to all applicable VA standards and specifications. Construction may be phased to minimize disruptions to the operations of the Medical Center.
The C&A requirements do not apply and a Security Accreditation Package is not required.
