Categories Defined

On GovTribe, a Category is a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code. NAICS codes are the primary system the federal government uses to categorize the products or services being procured. We maintain a definitive database of Categories, provide summary performance and activity information about related procurement and contract spending, and make it possible to use Category filtering to browse and search through information about the federal contracting market.

Category Filters

The Categories Explorer contains no filters. Just search by keyword or NAICS code.


Category Results View

All Category searches produce a set of resulting Agencies displayed in "card" format. The following basic information is provided on each card.

  • Category Name
  • How long ago there was Project or Contract activity under that Category
  • A brief description of the Category


Category Detail View

Every Category page on GovTribe provides a performance and activity profile for that Category, summarizing both Contract award and obligation data and procurement information (Projects). The following data elements appear on every Category page.

Header Section

Section Description
NAICS Code and Definition Provides the six digit NAICS code for the Category as well as a brief description of the kind of products or services covered.
Examples Provides a list of example products or services included in the Category.

Market Stats

The Market Stats block for a Category provides summary obligation and award data as well as comparative performance information about the contracting market for that Category. It is updated in real time as new obligation data is imported every 24 hours.

Section Description
Total Obligations and Average Ceiling Provides a graphical depiction of Total Dollars Obligated and Average Award Ceiling for over the previous four fiscal years.
  • Dollars Obligated - Indicates the total dollars obligated against active Contracts active during a fiscal year. Includes obligations against both Contracts awarded during that fiscal year and Contracts awarded in prior years that were still active.
  • Average Ceiling - For new Contracts awarded during that fiscal year, indicates the average contract ceiling (i.e. the total value of the Contract including all options).
Obligations by Set-Asides Provides a pie chart breakdown of Total Dollars Obligated over the previous four fiscal years broken down by Set-Aside type.
Top Agencies Provides a list of the top five Agencies that fund Contracts in this Category based on Total Dollars Obligated. The Donut chart on the left shows the percentage of obligations originating from an Agency over the past four fiscal years. The spark chart on the right shows Total Dollars Obligated by that Agency in this market segment over the past four fiscal years.
Top Vendors Provides a list of the top five Vendors that hold contracts in this Category based on Total Dollars Obligated. The Donut chart on the left shows the percentage of obligations that went to the Vendor over the past four fiscal years. The spark chart on the right shows Total Dollars Obligated to that Vendor in this market segment over the past four fiscal years.
Top Vehicles Provides a list of the top five Master Vehicles used for Contracts in this Category based on Total Dollars Obligated. The Donut chart on the left shows the percentage of obligations dispersed via the Master Vehicle over the past four fiscal years. The spark chart on the right shows Total Dollars Obligated through the Vehicle in this market segment over the past four fiscal years.

Section Description
By Agency Lists the Agencies that have the most currently active Projects in this Category.
By Office Lists the Offices that have the most currently active Projects in this Category.
By Person Lists the contracting officers that have the most currently active Projects in this Category.
Recent Project Cards Shows the most recently updated Projects in card view.
