Introduction:

The confined space rescue training device is commonly used to train Breathing Apparatus users in carrying out tasks as under conditions similar to real life conditions. Through use of this facility, the performance of the trainees shall be improved in areas of orientation, rescuing casualties, industrial related rescue and sharpening reaction time. The FwDv 7 (Host Nation Fire service regulation) also requires an annual training in a confined space rescue training device in accordance to DIN 14093.

Safe and effective use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) requires more from the user than a basic familiarization of how the SCBA works and how to don and doff the apparatus. In addition to the basic familiarization, SCBA user training must:

Physically stress the trainee Mentally stress the trainee Provide areas of restricted movement Let the user practice work skills Be safe and controlled

To achieve this objectives the training device shall be configured with variable orientation routes designed around a modular construction technology along with obstacles are placed. To make tasks more effective distracting effects such as darkness, flashing lights and noise shall be incorporated.

Design The mobile training gallery shall be designed with an efficient arrangement of components in the limited space available in a container, while maintaining a system that meets the training objectives identified above. The maze section may be made slightly smaller than the fixed counterpart. Safety for the trainees has to be ensured by having access to the maze panels for evacuation in the case of a trainee experiencing difficulties. The two main components of the mobile training gallery are:

Orientation section Control and Exercise room

Construction Due to the limited space at the FFTC the confined space rescue training device shall be constructed out of two (2) 40’ high cube sea container and one (1) 20’ high cube sea container with an efficient arrangement of components in the limited space available in the containers. A solid subsurface has to be applied for the container placement. The electrical connection and wiring has to be done in accordance to VDE.

The training room shall be equipped with loudspeakers, light effects, fog machine, heat zone, intercom devices, thermal camera, and emergency light and emergency exit.

The orientation section shall contain a maze which shall be modular alterable. The construction has to provide quick and easy access to the maze, high visibility and ease of re-configuring the passageway. All steel components shall finished in durable matt black epoxy surface which is non-reflective to IR cameras.

The orientation section has to be monitored with thermal cameras, two intercom devices, emergency lights and an emergency exit are installed. For realistic simulation effects the section can be subsided, a heat zone and light effects are also embedded in this section. Floor surfaces shall be designed to be planar. All vertical panels on the periphery of the system shall be quickly removable to enhance evacuation of a trainee experiencing difficulties. The design shall allow the training staff to construct a new layout in a relatively short space of time. The maze shall contain obstacles to mentally stress the trainees and create situations of restricted maneuverability. In addition to these obstacles, the training session shall be made more stressful by making the room dark, having distracting lights and by introducing distracting noises. To prevent familiarity, all obstacles shall be re-position able quite easily prior to training sessions. The walk through and crawl through section shall interfaced together throughout the different levels. The trainee shall able to access both sections via several pass through obstacles, inclined plank or stepladder:

Manhole Crawling pipe Door for passage between sections Grid horizontal half Grid vertical Grid diagonal Steel door Sliding door Roller treadmill Ladder Swivel window

The fitness room shall consist of one 40’container. Ceilings and walls shall be insulated with flame retardant sandwich panels, floor shall covered with three (3) mm rubber cover, with cable routing approx. 100 x 100 mm with 1 pc T 30 door with ground gasket with partition wall and T 30 door with 2 pcs. plastic windows, turn-tilt without roller blinds, 1 x 1000 x 1000 mm, 1 x 1500 x 1000 mm. Electrical and PC connectivity for training devices such as, a treadmill, an endless ladder and a bicycle ergometer has to be provided. The work room shall be equipped with two IR cameras, one intercom system, one bench, one first aid kit, one emergency light and one Air conditioning unit. The control room shall be equipped with one control desk, one work table, one door, one air condition unit and one first aid kit.

The equipping room shall consisting of one 20’ container. Ceilings and walls shall be insulated with flame retardant sandwich panels, floor shall covered with three (3) mm rubber cover, with two pcs. T 30 doors and one pc. plastic turn tilt window above the table. The equipping room shall be equipped with one intercom system, one bench, one table (2200x800mm), one first aid kit, two emergency lights, two doors and one air conditioning unit.

Other equipment: a roofing approx. 2500 x 7500 mm incl. statics and drawing, with galvanized substructure with grid grating with railings, gangway 1000 mm wide completely galvanized, with exit podium approx.1000 x 1000 mm and railing, all doors with aluminum push-pull fittings and matching locking cylinders, above all doors and windows easy to mount roofs approx.. 800 mm deep. All containers shall be sandblasted in area of cutouts and the welded doors and frames. Containers shall be completely primed and varnished in RAL 3000 K2.

Exercise course The structure of the course shall be shown schematically in an overview display. The current position of the participants shall be optically marked. Which attendees are currently in the track their pulse and energy consumption so far shall be recorded and shown on an electronic table. The simulation elements as well as safety devices, such as room lights and smoke extraction, shall be controlled via icons. The training session has to be conducted from the control room. A desk type control panel in the control room shall be used to control and monitor all aspects of the training session. An intercom system shall be installed in the orientation section to give specific instructions to the trainees by switching to the designated locations in this section. Thermal cameras with monitors on the control panel shall be used to view the trainees as they proceed along the maze. This shall enable the operator to the position of the trainees in the maze at all times.

These CCD cameras, in addition to providing visuals from the maze area and work room, shall also allow the transmitted pictures to be recorded and played back for review later.
