Q & A
W912ES20T0040 Q&A
2.1.1 – It appears overall length tolerance for the chain assemblies are waived, though pairs will be established from the closest length chains. Is this accurate? The drawing for the 1-1/2 chain assembly still notes “matched pairs”.
Yes, you are understanding this correctly. I believe the question is regarding the 1-1/4” chain and not 1-1/2” as indicated. The term “matched pair” refers to “the pairs of chains matched to the closest lengths.” The term “matched pair” is no longer used on the 1-1/2” chain drawings because pairing is not required for these chains. Per 3.1.2, 1-1/2” chain must also be measured and tagged, but they don’t need to be “paired.”
2.2.2.2, 2.2.2.3 – certs will be provided from the original chain manufacturer for the chain lots used, which will indicate break force testing, elongation, etc. Will break force and elongation testing need done again? No, the certs will serve as proof of meeting these requirements. No additional tests need be done.
2.5 – end links and pear links will be proof tested as assembled when the assemblies are proof tested. These would not be proof tested individually. Is this acceptable? Yes, that was the intent—there would be no way to test these individually because they will be assembled onto the chain. This is acceptable.
3.1.1, 3.1.2 – We certainly do not have 60’ of head room, nor would any other potential manufacturer I’m aware of.
The only way to accomplish this type of measurement would be to rent a large, portable crane to come to the facility to hang the chains. This may need done twice – once as the chain lengths are cut, and again after chains are finished and tested, before identification. Is this what is reasonably expected? Yes.
3.2 - Last sentence – Protect the equipment……………. We could plan to ship in wooden crates but I’m not sure what type of corrosion protection is reasonably applied to chains this size. We would typically ship chains with shot blast finish but I’m not sure these would fit in our large shot blast machine. They will not deteriorate or degrade in storage but some corrosion could be possible. Aren’t they going into the water anyway? Correct. Shipped in wooden crates is acceptable.
1-1/4 chain drawing – tolerance questions / comments:
1.5” dia. Connecting link between chain and pear master – The 6.25” length dim. Has a tolerance of +/- .040”. This is not critical and too tight. I would think could be made a ref. dim. Same with the inside width. These are not critical—they were from the original supply Contract as-builts (I assume they were some manufacturer’s standard product dimensions). These can be considered reference dimensions.
Chain inside length – our chain has a nominal IL of 3.78”, which does not fall within the spec as currently drawn.
Again, these are from the original supply Contract as-builts and were probably some manufacturer’s standard dimensions at the time. Your IL of 3.78” meets the requirements for Grade 80 chain and is acceptable.
1-1/2 chains – tolerance questions / comments:
Chain inside length – our chain has an IL of 4.49”, which does not fall within the spec as currently drawn. Similar to above, this is acceptable.
LD2-12-19 oblong end link – is the 5.375” outside width critical? This dimension is critical since this is the end that connects to the hoist drum.
All chain lengths – With our nominal chain link lengths, and the products requiring either an odd or even link count, I am assuming we would settle on a link count that is longer rather than shorter than the chain assemblies nominal target lengths? Is this correct? Correct.
3.2 refers to crates. Another option would be 1 chain per sealed 55 gal steel drum, with lid labeled. Would this be acceptable as well? Absolutely-- 55 gallon drums are fine.
Attachment B Page 6 – The “Connection Bolt & Adjusting Nut for Mark No’s LD4-ALL & LD5-ALL” reference the threads as “S.A.E. STD”, may this be assumed to be a 2-8 UN thread per ASME B1.1? Response: Yes, 2-8 UN is acceptable.
2.2.3 Chain Marking – ASTM A391 does not allow chains to be marked using indented characters. May a manufacturer typical marking per ASTM A391 be applied to the chains? Response: Correct. Mark chain per ASTM A391 (Body chain links shall not be marked with indented characters). The language in the SOW must have been a carryover from an older spec.
