HDPE Placement: The trench drain shall be installed using a machine capable of excavating the trench to the depth indicated, laying the perforated pipe and installing the granular material all in one single pass operation. Pipe shall be carefully inspected before it is laid. Any defective or damaged pipe shall be rejected, which includes damage to the geotextile sock. No pipe shall be laid when the trench conditions or weather is unsuitable for such work. All extents of the perforated pipe shall be covered with geotextile sock. Where pipe connections are needed, geotextile shall either overlap by a minimum of 12 inches or be sewn together.
iii. Tolerance: Pipe lines shall be laid to the grades and alignment shown in the contract drawings. Variation from the prescribed grade and alignment shall not exceed one-tenth (0.10) foot. No deviation from grade shall cause a depression in the trench drain that could retain fluids or solids.
e. Material Testing: Strength tests of pipe shall conform to field service test requirements of the AWA Specification, ASTM specification, or AASHTO specification covering the product.
f. Inspection:
i. Cleaning: Locate and expose all cleanouts required for access to trench drain system. Provide access to cleanouts with adequate area for operation of inspection equipment and personnel. Clean and flush pipe segments to be inspected. During cleaning operations care shall be taken and pressures regulated to ensure that no damage is done to the pipe and surrounding geotextile fabric.
ii. Televising: Propel closed-circuit television camera through all trench drain pipe segments to document condition of pipe and joints. Use cleanout for access to pipe segments. Operate camera from remote video monitor display.
Record camera from remote video monitor display, and videotape for Trench Drain Inspection Report.
g. Procedure:
i. Record pipe invert elevations in all trench drain cleanouts.
ii. Move camera through entire pipe segment.
iii. Center lens in pipe area.
iv. Maximum Camera Speed: 30 feet per minute.
v. Relay video signal from camera to monitor and video tape recorder.
vi. Produce audio record concurrently with video record.
vii. Stop camera when necessary to properly document significant items as requested by COR. Significant items include but are not limited to separated joints, crushed pipe, improper alignment, valleys, or raises. If a significant item is identified then the suspect pipe shall be replaced, at no additional cost to the Government.
viii. Zero footage counter at inside wall of cleanouts in each pipe segment.
ix. Verify accuracy of footage counter by measuring surface distance between cleanouts with a measuring wheel.
x. In case of obstruction in pipe segment, reset camera in downstream cleanout and propel upstream to opposite side of obstruction.
xi. If additional cleaning is required subsequent to initial flushing it shall be at no additional cost to the Government.
xii. If the video indicates a deflection in excess of 7.5% may have occurred, then a mandrel test is required to verify. If the mandrel test also fails, the suspect pipe shall be replaced, at no additional cost to the Government.
21. Precast Concrete Headwall: shall be as shown in Contract Drawings (sheet CS501).
22. 6” PVC Pipe Cleanouts: shall be as shown in Contract Drawings (sheet CS501).
23. Jointing:
a. PVC Jointing: Joints shall be solvent-cemented joints in accordance with the requirements of ASTM D 2564, ASTM D 2855, or ASTM F 656.
b. HDPE Jointing: Joints shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. A pipe with physical imperfections shall not be installed. No more than 5 percent stretch in a section will be permitted.
24. Grading: After installation of the trench drains, sufficient time shall be allowed for the work area to drain. After sufficient drainage has occurred, the work area shall be graded smooth so the surface runoff will drain from the existing embankment toe to the existing drainage swale. All disturbed areas are to be graded and seeded.
25. Site Restoration: After trench drains are complete to the required lines and grades, the Contractor will no longer access the site with construction equipment except to restore the areas damaged by the Contractor’s operations to pre-project conditions as specified in the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) 2014 publication of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction (NDDOT-Standard Specifications).
a. Materials: Turfed areas disturbed by the Contractor’s operations shall be topsoiled and seeded as necessary to restore the ground surface to pre-project conditions.
i. Topsoil: All imported topsoil material used for turf restoration shall be natural, friable, fertile soil of loamy character, containing an amount of organic matter normal to the region, capable of sustaining healthy plant life, and reasonably free from subsoil, roots, heavy or stiff clay, stones larger than 2 inches in greatest dimension, noxious weeds, sticks, brush, litter, and other deleterious matter as specified in Section 203.04 NDDOT-Standard Specifications.
ii. Seed mix Class II – Late Season as specified in Section 251.03 D Seed NDDOT-Standard Specifications, shall be used for reestablishment of turf. The Contractor shall submit documentation from the seed supplier verifying the type of seed mix supplied. Documentation shall include the seed mix designation, percent pure live seed, percent germination, weed seed content, and date tested.
iii. Temporary Seed: Seed species for winter erosion protection, temporary surface erosion control shall consist of 64 pounds of oats per acre as specified in Section 251.03 E Temporary Cover Crop NDDOT-Standard Specifications.
iv. Mulch: Use hydraulic mulch free of germination or growth inhibiting factors.
Provide hydraulic mulch free of recycled paper and toxins. Provide hydraulic mulch with fibers that are capable of absorbing water and allowing infiltration to the underlying soil without restricting emergence of seedlings. Provide a Certificate of Compliance stating that hydraulic mulch has a moisture content less than 10 percent at time of delivery as specified in Section 253.03 B Hydraulic Mulch NDDOT-Standard Specifications.
b. Placement:
i. Topsoil Placement: Placement of imported topsoil to restore damaged areas shall only be done when unfrozen topsoil can be placed on unfrozen ground. If these conditions cannot be met, placement of topsoil and the permanent seed mix shall be postponed until acceptable conditions can be achieved. Placement of topsoil shall be staged such that construction traffic for hauling material does not travel over the topsoil after it is placed. Topsoil shall be spread with a low ground pressure dozer, skid steer loaders, or other equipment capable of lightly compacting the soil and approved by the Contracting Officer. Topsoil shall be spread in one lift. The finished grade shall be such that after subsequent treatment (tillage, topsoiling and planting) the planted grade shall be even with adjoining turfed areas and 1 inch below adjacent paved areas.
ii. Seeding Placement: Placement of the permanent seed mix in an area requiring turf restoration shall be done after operations for placement of trench drains and preparation of the ground surface are complete. No finished construction area shall be left unseeded. When substantially complete areas are not seeded with the permanent seed mix due to weather conditions, a temporary seed shall be placed.
1. Hydroseeding: A two-step hydroseeding operation shall be used. Seed shall be placed first and the hydraulic mulch be placed afterwards to ensure that seed comes into direct contact with the soil. Seed shall be installed by hydroseeding with 500 gallons of water per acre. It is recommended to add 75 pounds of hydraulic mulch per 500 gallons of water for a visual tracer to ensure uniform coverage. After seeding, apply hydraulic mulch at a rate of 1 ton per acre with a minimum of 95% coverage of the seedbed. During the two-step hydroseeding application, the spray shall be directed to obtain a uniform material distribution as evidenced by a formation of a "blotter-like" cover. The mulch shall permit percolation of water to the underlying soil. The seed mixed with water shall be applied within 1 hour after adding to the tank.
2. Seeding Conditions: Seeding operations for the permanent seed mix shall be performed only during periods when beneficial results can be obtained. When drought, excessive moisture, or other unsatisfactory conditions prevail, the work shall be stopped when directed. When special conditions warrant a variance to the seeding operations, proposed alternate times shall be submitted for approval.
3. Seeding Application Rate: Permanent Class II - Late Season seed shall be applied at a minimum rate of 50 lbs/acre.
26. Watering: The Contractor shall be responsible for watering after planting to promote adequate growth and development for a minimum of 21 days. Water shall be distributed with equipment that does not erode or disturb the mulch. If the grass wilts, or if the soil becomes crusted and desiccated during germination, the Contracting Officer may direct watering.
Watering directed by the Contracting Officer shall be performed within 48 hours after notice by the Contracting Officer to the Contractor; and shall place about 10,000 gallons per acre.
27. Other Restoration: Any pavement, sidewalk, or curb and gutter damaged by the Contractor’s operations shall be restored to pre-project conditions in accordance with Devils Lake City Specifications.
