| 1 | Solicitation | Does the Arsenal currently have an ID grind or several different |
size ID grinders that currently performing this scope of work? If so what are the manufacturer and model no. of each and basic specs compared to the current requested new machine. We are trying to understand if this is a one to one replacement or replacing several ID grinding machines or upgrading from manual machines that are not CNC etc.
Perhaps an explanation of how the arsenal currently performs the work of this requested machine and again with what type and brand machines (manufacturer, model no.) and the basic sizes of the machine will help us to understand this machines intended operational purpose. We are currently assuming this machine will be used for barrel chamber grinding for the different size barrels produced. It may be the existing machines are CNC but do not have the handling system needed/desired again we have no idea.
This is why an explanation of the existing grinding processes and machines currently being used and then the purpose of this machine and the current specifications will make things much clearer for us. It will also show us where we should place greater design efforts and evaluations with regards to our proposed machines operational design capability and thus the machines overall improved performance with regards to your needs.
It is our intent to offer a specially designed and US manufactured machine for your requirement that will incorporate some existing standard components and subassemblies for example, chucks, spindle, slides, CNC controller and others. The machine will also have many other specially designed components to achieve the highest operational capability and performance needed for your purposes.
This is not a one to one replacement. The new machine will be able to process our existing work and will expand our capabilities to process larger workpieces. The machine will be used to grind straight and tapered zones in the powder chamber of cannon tubes.

| 2 | Solicitation | : If possible some pictures of the existing machines currently being |
used and their handling systems would also help to understand things better as well.
| For security reasons, we are not able to post pictures. | 26-Apr-18 | 26-Apr-18 | |
| 3 | Solicitation | 3.2.2 | : In section 3.2.2 of the Required Characteristics states the |
following:
e. Internal grinding diameter minimum 2.5"
f. Internal grinding diameter maximum 8.0"
g. Internal grinding depth maximum 72"
This would then infer that the machine needs the capability to grind a 2.5" diameter hole to a depth of 72" which I do not believe is quite what was intended. The machine could have the spindle positioning and stroke capability to perform such but not the capability to actually perform a spindle grinding of such a smaller hole compared to such a long depth without many other components and systems. Again there are ways of doing such but I don't believe this is what was intended but we are not sure and need clarification.
Please specify the maximum depth requirement for the 2.5" hole as well as other larger hole diameters needed up to the 8.0" with the maximum depth for each to clarify this issue.
The intent is not to grind a Ø2.5" hole 72" deep, assume a tapered hole with space for a spindle.

| 4 | Solicitation | 3.2.10 | Approximate nominal spindle sizes are 3.25" round x 36", 4.00" round x 36" and 5.00" round x 57" long. The first couple of sentences in this section state that 3 deep hole spindles will be provided capable of full grinding depth of 105mm, 120mm, and 155mm cannon tubes with the longest grinding to a depth of 60". This is again confusing when again compared to item no. 3 and a maximum depth of 72" for a 2.5" round hole. If this is meant to say the machine will have a maximum stroke depth of 72" not correlated to hole diameter this then becomes logical. And the 2.5" minimum diameter is about the positioning capability of the machines minimum grinding spindle center line offset with regards to the machines chucking spindle center line with a simultaneous grinding spindle stroke capacity of 72" then this is also logical. We just need clarification on these issues. |
| The nominal spindle sizes are for the work we are currently performing. |
We want the machine to be capable of grinding deeper should we need that capability in the future.
