Question and Answer Log

Question NumberDocumentDocument ReferenceQuestion/CommentsAnswer/ResponseDate ReceivedDate Posted
1Solicitation3.2.3.13What type and size grinding wheel will you be running? CBN or

bonded, Diameter and width please.

We do not have a developed process for a machine of this type. We are interested in hearing from offerors what size and type grinding wheels their machine can run and what they recommend. The material that we work with is 4340 alloy steel hardned to Rc 38-42. That said, we typically run bonded wheels on our other grinding machines. We would anticipate the machine to accommodate wheel sizes that correlate with the size of the machine and its tool changer capacity. We will evaluate the offeror's proposal.

2Solicitation3.2.3.13What type of dresser do you require? 1, 2 or 3 point diamond

dresser for bonded wheels or Rotary Dresser for CBN? If Rotary Dresser, do you have a preference of the rotary dresser manufacture?

We do not have a developed process for a machine of this type. We are interested in hearing from offerors what type of dresser their machine utilizes and what they recommend. That said, we typically run single point on our other grinding machines. We do not specify a dresser manufacturer. We will evaluate the offeror's proposal.

3Solicitation3.2.3.13Working with coolants and filtration in the past, depending on the

coolant manufacture, coolant can be stripped out of the water with filtration below 15 to 25 microns. The solicitation references "filter size of 0.00004." This equates to 1 micron. Can you please confirm this is correct specification? If it is not, can you please advise the micron needed for filtration.

This paragraph contained a typo, change 0.00004" to 0.0004". Change is reflected in Amendment 0001 to the solicitation.12-Feb-1815-Feb-18
4Solicitation3.2.2.3Under 3.2.2.3, Travels, the Government is requesting 39" Z. Will the

Government accept a 40" plus part height capability or must the Z travel be 39" as a minimum?

The government has updated it's specification regarding Section 3.2.2.3, as well as several other sections based on this question. Please see updated Section 3.2.2.3 in Amendment 0001 to the Solicitation for the Government's response to this question.13-Feb-1815-Feb-18
5Solicitation3.4.2.2 and 3.2.3.7In the package Item. 3.4.2.2 asks the vendor to supply all tooling for the

test cut. Also, Item. 3.2.3.7 requests all 183 tool pockets to have tool holders. Will you supply to us a list of holders?

See spreadsheet uploaded to FBO titled "Tool Holder.xlsx". Offerors are instructed to provide a quote based on this list. NOTE: This list is representative, not definitive, and will be used only for evaluation purposes. The actual requirement may call for more or fewer tools, and tools that we have not listed in the Excel document.

6SolicitationItem 5 aboveClarificationFor clarification, the offeror is NOT required to fill out the pricing column in the attachment labeled "Tool Holders.xlsx" noted in item 5 above. This attachment was uploaded to FBO to provide offerors a representative list of tool holders and tooling that could be used by this machine. Offerors proposed pricing in Attachment 0002 - Price Evaluation Sheet shall include pricing for items on this representative list.5-Mar-18
7SolicitationMost machining centers are not designed or built to actually use grinding wheels, that are defined within the Excel attachment "Question and Answers log 3-1-18". So has the Q & A info been somehow replaced by this grinding and filtration info by mistake?

There is not any info or specs on the 12 machining centers requested? Or is this solicitation request simply for HSK holders and tooling only for up to 12 machines?

The Q&A is correct. The requiring activity agrees that most machining centers are not built for grinding. We are asking for a machine that IS built for grinding by the manufacturer as detailed in the spec. We do not want to simply use grinding wheels in a machine, the machine needs to be built for grinding operations. If the offeror's machine is not built to perform grinding operations, it cannot be considered for award.

The solicitation is for the purchase of 5 Axis Milling Machines, to include the tool holders and tooling. The Tool Holder List was provided to assist the offerors in assembling their overall proposal for the machines.
