Narrative: Sexually Transmitted Disease Analyzer
At William Beaumont Army Medical Center our goal is to achieve readiness by providing patient friendly access to high quality healthcare. The Microbiology Department hospital supports a Level II trauma center, 65 outpatient clinics and 4 satellite laboratories within the El Paso and Fort Bliss area. The analyzer will be used to test and diagnose sexually transmitted diseases. This requested equipment, associated tests, and accessories allow the department to identify relevant STDs for epidemiological reporting in compliance with Texas Department of Health Regulations, US Army Public Health Command, and MEDCOM guidelines. These critical medical tests allow for the department to proactively identify and work with the local public health department against future exposures and outbreaks of STDs in the El Paso community and FT Bliss establishments.
The Microbiology Department requires a fully automated molecular nucleic acid detection analyzer capable of processing a minimum of 250 samples within one eight hour shift using only one technologists with minimal hands on time. This analyzer must have the ability to run multiple assays from a single patient sample and support multiple reagent kits to be loaded on board for testing at one time. The following tests must be available and be approved by the Bureau of Biologics of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the platform to fulfill the testing requirements for William Beaumont Army Medical Center:
Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) assay
Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) assay
Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) assay
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) assay
HPV 16 18/45 genotype assay
The vendor’s analyzer must also be able to support ThinPrep PreservCyt solution that are approved/proprietary collection method used in the WBAMC DPALS Cytology Section and Department of Defense (DOD) wide facilities that WBAMC support. This allows for direct and multiple testing directly from Pap smear collection reducing recollection. WBAMC also has a limited space so the analyzer must meet the limitation requirements of 4.0 x 2.7 x 5.6ft. Anything greater in length will not be able to be supported in the lab. This means that the department is only able to support an analyzer with one (1) unit as some analyzers require two (2) pieces of equipment taking up a larger space.
