Statement of Work
C.1 Background:
C.1.1 The US Army Maneuver Center of Excellence considers the squad to be the foundational element to the strategic development of an overmatch win scenario. The success of this foundational squad element depends on the Squad Leaders ability to effectively command and control his two, four-man fire teams. The current Army Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), the Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV), separates the squad during mounted operations hindering the squad leaders effectiveness. The Army has attempted acquisition programs more than once, and all have failed to deliver an IFV replacement when restricted to a single platform capable of carrying a nine-solder infantry squad with better-than-BFV performance.
The Squad Centric Mounted Maneuvers (SCMM) concept represents a paradigm shift in IFV development strategy by embracing a networked two-vehicle concept, leveraging existing communication technologies, enabling the Squad Leader with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with both of his fire teams virtually. This new paradigm allows the squad to operate mounted as it does dismounted, by fire team, augmenting overall squad freedom of maneuver and fire capabilities. Additionally, the SCMM concept will demonstrate the maturation of ideas such as a two man crew, which will be made possible by remoting the existing M2A2 Operation Desert Storm-Situational Awareness
(ODS-SA) Bradley turret.
