SILVER BLANKS 1 OZ, SMALL TRAY
C.1.0 SCOPE
The contractor shall provide all labor, materials and equipment necessary to finalize tray design, fabricate injection molded trays, manufacture tray molds, perform maintenance on the molds and supply the molded trays.
It is anticipated that the United States Mint will require 40,000 trays.
C.2.0 BACKGROUND
The United States Mint produces over 40 million Silver Bullion coins per year. Silver blanks for coin manufacturing are produced by various vendors and then shipped to the Mint in these reusable trays.
The trays will be designed to hold 200 blanks on edge, with ten wells each capable of holding 20 blanks only. Additionally the trays shall be able to be stacked (nested) and be able to support a stack of 20 full trays.
C.3.0 APPLICABLE DRAWINGS
Drawing Number: 20151218A-US Mint 200 Blank Tray Concept
C.4.0 SILVER BLANK (PLANCHET) SPECIFICATION
Diameter: 1.578”+/- 0.002 (40.04 mm +/-0.05) Thickness: 0.108”+/- 0.004 (2.77mm+/- 0.10) Weight: 1 troy ounce
C.5.0 MATERIALS
All trays shall be manufactured from Polylac 757H ABS Resin, natural color, or other equivalent resin.
The material shall not cause the silver blanks (planchets) to be discolored, or tarnished while stored in the trays.
C6.0 TRAY MOLDS
The contractor shall design and manufacture a tray mold for use in making the trays. The mold life shall be at least 10 years/1,000,000 cycles for the rated usage. Mold drawings shall be provided by the contractor for the Mint’s approval prior to start of mold manufacture. The Molds as described above along with the mold drawings and tray drawings shall be considered property of the United States Mint and therefore will be identified as Government Furnished Equipment. Mold acceptance shall be based on the molded tray parts meeting contract requirements specified herein.
C7.0 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
The concept tray design shown in the drawings listed in paragraph C3.0 is for reference only. The dimensions indicated are minimums. The contractor is required to completely design a tray meeting the requirements specified herein and submit detailed, fully dimensioned drawings for approval. Along with the drawings, the contractor shall submit a minimum of five prototype trays for pre-approval.
C7.1 STACKABILITY
These reusable trays will be used to ship silver blanks from various vendors to the US Mint. The top of the full trays containing 200 blanks on edge will be lined with tarnish-inhibiting paper and then will be vacuum-wrapped with clear polyolefin bags. The trays will then be stacked (10 to 20 high) onto skids and shipped to the US Mint. The tray design shall be such that the full tray with the vacuum wrapped bags shall be capable of being stacked and nesting with each other. The trays shall be free of sharp edges to prevent punctures in the polyolefin bags.
C8.0 FIRST ARTICLE SAMPLES
First article samples shall be manufactured utilizing the production equipment, tools and processes to be employed in normal production. First article samples shall be inspected by the government prior to the start of production quantities. Approval of the first article shall not relieve the contractor of the responsibility to comply with specification requirements.
C9.0 PRE-PRODUCTION RUN
After approval of the first article samples the contractor shall provide 500 trays for final approval and for testing and shipping the trays. Half of the trays shall be shipped to Cour D’alene, ID, and half to Attleboro, MA.
