Statement of Work: Universal Testing Machine

The study of the mechanical properties and reaction to applied forces of the peanut plant, pods, hulls, kernels, and associated materials is required for proper design of peanut harvesting, cleaning, shelling, and handling equipment. The Universal Testing Machine will be used to measure the mechanical properties and behaviors of peanut plants, pods, hulls, kernels, and associated materials when subjected to compression, tension, and shear forces. The Universal Testing Machine will record the force, displacement, and velocity of the test head when applying the force to test specimens of various peanut plant components. The recorded force, displacement, and velocity are used to calculate stress, strain, and various physical properties related to the strength and viscoelastic properties of the test specimen. These data will be used to determine the mechanical effects of existing and proposed peanut harvesting, storage, and processing equipment on peanut plants and peanuts. Custom fixtures will be utilized in the universal testing machine to allow it to apply the forces and measure the effects of devices used in the harvesting, storage, and processing of peanuts and related materials. The Universal Testing Machine should have a maximum capacity of 5 kN(1,125 lb) with related fixtures capable of applying the force in both tension and compression. The displacement rate of the test head assembly shall be controlled between 0.002 and 1,015 mm/min. The Universal Testing Machine will come with a 5kN(1,125 lb) capacity load cell and a 111N(25 lb) capacity load cell for measuring applied forces. Machine will have quick release adapters for mounting fixtures and load cells to the machine. Associated software should control the test apparatus, record the data, and provide data processing to display stress, strain, force, displacement, and velocity.
