DESCRIPTION FOR BRAND NAME OR EQUAL

Stereo microscopy system – Nikon SMZ18 stereo microscope, Nikon DS-Fi3 digital camera, Nikon NIS Elements software, or Equal

The following are the salient characteristics that will be used to determine if other than the brand name are equal to the item that meets USGS requirements:

• Transmitted and reflected light sources integrated into a single stereo microscope unit

• Diascopic illumination base with condenser lenses that can be switched between low and high magnification

• Macroscopic and microscopic imaging capabilities, integrating 1x apochromatic objective and 10x eyepieces (working distance between base and objective lens of at least 60 mm)

• Manual zooming body (zoom ratio of 18:1 and a zoom range of 0.75-13.5x, or comparable)

• Ring fiber optic illumination set with episcopic illumination to fit around the 1x objective lens

• Coaxial light illuminator to view light reflected from the surface and achieve shadowless images

• Digital color camera head (at least 6 megapixels) with adapter for stereo microscope;

must be compatible with microscope and image processing software (i.e., another name brand camera will not work with a Nikon microscope and software package).

• Image analysis software that enables live image and extended depth of focus function to combine images taken at different Z-levels to build a single combined image that is entirely in focus
