About this file

This statement of work describes the requirement for a contractor to service a custom-made drop solution calorimeter for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Glenn Research Center. The calorimeter needs to be disassembled, inspected, and repaired to address unstable heat flow signal and unreliable data measurements. Specifically, the contractor shall propose servicing the calorimeter to reinstate the original operating conditions of enthalpy measurements of 5 mg samples at 800 degrees Celsius with +/- 1% precision, and a heat flow signal with maximum 0.05 microvolts peak-to-peak noise when empty. The research involving drop solution calorimetry experiments will support two projects related to space nuclear propulsion and transformative tools and technologies.

Statement of Work

This statement of work describes the necessary conditions to service a drop solution calorimeter to support the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center (GRC) in meeting its research goals for R&D of aerospace materials for extreme environment applications. The necessary conditions include but are not limited to repairing a custom-made drop solution calorimeter.

Scope of Work The NASA Glenn Research Center High Temperature Thermochemistry Laboratory provides key thermodynamic properties between solid-gas and solid-solid/liquid interactions over a broad temperature range. Our in-house drop solution calorimeter provides key measurements of the thermodynamic properties of aerospace materials (e.g. enthalpies of formation, mixing, order-disorder, etc.) needed to understand and model phenomena behavior of these materials under extreme environmental conditions. The ability to identify potential degradation mechanisms and predict how materials will interact with their environments can minimize expensive testing and speed up materials development. Our custom-made drop solution calorimeter, which is exclusively manufactured and serviced by KEP Technologies Inc., is currently exhibiting unstable heat flow signal causing unreliable data measurements. The calorimeter needs to be disassembled and inspected to identify and repair the part causing unstable/cyclical noise in the heat flow signal. Our requirement is to repair our custom-made drop solution calorimeter to continue our research work to study the thermochemical properties of aerospace materials under extreme conditions. The research involving drop solution calorimetry experiments will support 2 research tasks under Space Nuclear Propulsion and Transformative Tools and Technologies (TTT) projects.

Hardware requirements The Contractor shall propose service of our drop solution calorimeter. The repair shall reinstate original calorimeter operating conditions.

Drop Solution calorimeter operating requirements

Enthalpy measurements of 5 mg samples at 800 °C with +/- 1% precision.
