1. BACKGROUND

As a component of DHS, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is responsible for protecting our Nation’s borders in order to prevent terrorists and terrorist weapons from entering the United States, while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. CBP is also responsible for apprehending individuals attempting to enter the U.S. illegally; stemming the flow of drugs and other contraband. USBP has established the National Subterranean Operations (NSO) group within the Law Enforcement Operations Directorate (LEOD). This group identifies critical mission tasks that include: detecting cross-border tunnels and subterranean activity, responding to illegal activities associated with the tunnel to support law enforcement actions, and resolving final tunnel status by remediating the tunnel. This requires a unique set of tools and technology used to mitigate this extreme issue.
