TITLE: 48 Channel DAC for Cryogenic Sensor Biasing Requesting Lab/Division/Group: PML, 687.08
NB68708-22-00294, ACQ0033131
General Statement of Need The Quantum Sensors Group (QSG) requires electronics for the biasing of 3000 cryogenic sensors. This requires 48 total DAC channels, and associated breakout boxes (96 channels total) and low-pass filtering. To enable both sensor biasing and debugging/tuning, each DAC channel shall be capable of providing both DC and AC output. Due to the low-temperature operation of the sensors, low-noise and high voltage stability is also required. This need can be met by choice of a suitable vendor with experience developing cryogenic electronics. Additionally, all biasing electronics included in this packet shall fit with other readout electronics within a 22.5x35.2x67.4 inch electronics rack, which limits the total number of DAC systems allowable. Thus, high channel counts on each DAC system is necessary. The goal of this contract is to provide the Government with the electronics necessary to bias 3000 cryogenic sensors, which will be used in a spectrometer for nanoscale x-ray tomography.
Background The QSG requires 48 total DAC channels and associated breakout and filtering electronics for the biasing of 3000 cryogenic sensors. To enable both sensor biasing and sensor debugging and tuning, each DAC channel shall be capable of providing both DC and AC output. To ensure low-noise and high stability, all electronics shall be specifically designed for operation with cryogenic experiments. These electronics will enable the operation of a 3000 pixel spectrometer, which will be integrated into an instrument for nanoscale x-ray tomography of integrated circuits.
The state-of-the-art in low-temperature DAC systems is provided by vendors with proven expertise in low-noise, high stability electronics designed specifically for low-temperature experiments. The highest channel count on a single DAC system that meets the resolution requirements set by low-temprature experiments is 24 channels, as shown in the Market Research document included in this packet. The dominant risk associated with the current requirement is time, as project deadlines require that all 3000 sensors be demonstrated by April 2022. Historically, similar electronic equipment has been custom-developed in-house by QSG scientists. However, such an endeavor would require approximately 18 weeks of full-time investment and increases risk associated with the procurement of specific components, particularly with current COVID-related supply chain delays. The sole vendor found which meets the Government’s needs for this project (QDevil APS) has quoted an off-the-shelf solution at 10 weeks leadtime, satisfying all scheduling requirements while also meeting the technical requirements specified in this packet.

Statement of Work: 48 Channel DAC for Cryogenic Sensor Biasing 2 Version 1.0 (2019) Double-click on for further assistance.
Objective(s) The main objective of this requirement is to enable the biasing of 3000 cryogenic sensors. The procurement of 48 DAC channels with both DC and AC output and associated breakout and filtering electronics on the timeline defined by project deadlines represents successful fulfillment of this requirement. These biasing electronics will be used to enable the operation of 3000 pixel x-ray spectrometer to be used for nanoscale x-ray tomography.
Scope/General Requirements The Government expects to accomplish biasing of 3000 cryogenic sensors, a critical requirement in the use of these sensors in an x-ray spectrometer. The current contract will provide the DAC electronics necessary to provide such biasing, via the procurement of 48 DAC channels with DC and AC output and associated breakout and low-pass filtering electronics. Key elements of this requirement are the need for 48 total DAC channels, breakout boxes with 96 total channels, and low-pass filters compatible with the DAC/breakout setup. These electronics shall meet DC voltage resolution requirements and be provided by a vendor with proven expertise in the development of electronics for low-temperature applications, to reduce risk associated with meeting the low-noise, high stability requirements inherent to cryogenic experiments.
