Statement of Work

Project Title: Space-time Finite Element Solver Development for Simulating Large-scale Motions of Bodies, Part II

Scope of Work:

The Laboratories for Computational Physics and Fluid Dynamics (Code 6040) are developing an adaptive space-time finite element solver for the simulation of high-speed compressible flow with moving bodies as part of the JENRE® computational framework.

The long-term objective is to generalize the computational framework, and enable it to accommodate the large-scale motions of bodies, in the presence of dynamically reacting compressible flows. There are several key challenges in this regard, including mesh generation, mesh quality, and robust convergence in space-time. With this in mind, the PI (and his team) will develop a systematic process for automatically meshing the moving geometry in order to accommodate large-scale motions. During this phase of the project, the PI and his team will focus on improving the existing interface between JENRE® and Capstone®. The objective will be to make this interface as streamlined as possible, and to omit all non-Navy tools from the established workflow. In addition, the resulting meshes will be tested on a spinning cross geometry and a pitching airfoil geometry under inviscid and viscous conditions, in order to assess different strategies for enforcing boundary conditions. Finally, the PI and his team will develop a preliminary framework for generalizing the advancing-front mesh generation strategy from 3D to 4D.

Location of the Work:

The work will be performed primarily off-site at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park Pennsylvania, with some of the development occurring on-site in coordination with the NRL POC.

Period of Performance:

The period of performance will start on June 8th, 2021 and end on December 31st, 2021.

Deliverable Schedule:

• Develop a tightly-coupled interface between JENRE® and Capstone®, and provide source code for the generation of space-time meshes in 3 dimensions, (i.e. 2D space + time). Remove the TetGen volume-meshing capability from the existing prototype interface. Complete by the end of August.

• Provide source code for setting up and executing 3D space-time simulations of the flow over a spinning cross and pitching airfoil in an inviscid fluid. Perform experiments to compare different strategies for enforcing symmetry boundary conditions. Complete by the end of October.

• Provide source code for setting up and executing 3D space-time simulations of the flow over a spinning cross and pitching airfoil in a viscous fluid. Perform experiments to compare different strategies for enforcing no-slip boundary conditions. Complete by the end of November.

• Develop a theoretical framework for generating 3D and 4D space-time slab meshes using an advancing-front approach. Begin developing a prototype, in-house, meshing capability for space-time slabs. Complete by the end of December.
