STATEMENT OF WORK
I. GENERAL INFORMATION
Contractor will provide training in Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, how to use, care for, and maintain a mobile, true-color LiDAR backpack. Additionally, training will be provided for 1) associated software necessary for data collection (backpack software), 2.
comprehensive point cloud post processing software, and 3) visualization software and best practices.
The USGS is engaged with NASA Ames in the evaluation of tools that will be flown to the polar regions of the moon to prospect for water-ice. Specifically, the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) and the Resource Exploration and Science of OUR Cosmic Environment (RESOURCE) project. In 2015 NASA Ames conducted a lunar analogue experiment in the Mojave Desert in which they tested the Near Infrared Volatile Spectrometer Subsystem (NIRVSS) and the Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS). Application of geostatistical methods have been applied to the Mojave datasets specifically the relationship between the two tools and surface reflectance. Additional analyses are required for predictive statistics that will be used on the moon. Testing of these methods on terrestrial analogues is critical.
To test these methods true-color, ultra-high-resolution terrain models must be created. LiDAR is the only method that can produce the data at the level of fidelity required. A recent moratorium on the USGS for using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), a typical way to conduct LiDAR surveys, has created difficulties in obtaining them, thereby initiating a purchase request for a true-color Lidar backpack. Upon award of the purchase request, training in the hardware and software will be necessary.
II. WORK REQUIREMENTS
The company providing the LiDAR backpack, will no doubt require specific software that is essential for the backpack to record and process data. Will provide software packages for point cloud post-processing, transforming, and visualizing the LiDAR data. Depending on the software additional modules, e.g., terrain and forestry/vegetation modules, may be required to allow refinement of the data into digital elevation models, digital surface models, and classification of vegetation. Finally, training for use of the backpack, associated software, maintenance, and best practices will be provided.
III. SUPPORTING INFORMATION
• Training may be provided from vendor at the vendor location or customer’s location.
• Key personnel providing the training will be an expert in LiDAR methods, point cloud data, and software processing.
• Period of Performance of the training, to be determined.
