Statement of Work Argos Biometer
A. INTRODUCTION:
The VA Boston Healthcare System Surgical Department, Ophthalmology Section, located at the Jamaica Plain Campus, is requesting an Argos Biometer equipment.
This device measures the length and shape of the eye to determine lens implant after cataract surgery from Alcon.
This device has better success at penetrating very dense cataracts (i.e., to determine length of eye, the device needs to send a laser light signal through the eye- including dense cataract, which then reflects off the retina and returns to a sensor to record the time-delay and extrapolate length), giving accurate results when other machines do not even provide a reading. Many of our veterans have very dense cataracts. Surgeon has reviewed peer-reviewed literature comparing the Argos to other known biometers; reviewed marketing material and clinical data provided by Alcon (manufacturer); discussed with other VA surgeons who are experienced cataract surgeons.
Due to continued use and need of this equipment, Ophthalmology needs this in place for patient care.
This machine is a standalone system that is not connected to the VA network. Clinical Engineering will inspect and set up the device for the clinic.
