STATEMENT OF WORK

PR 4200833020

1. Objective/Requirements

We request to procure an Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) that represents the latest state-of-the-art technology for measuring plankton and particles in aquatic environments. The IFCB is an in-situ automated submersible imaging flow cytometer that generates images of particles in-flow taken from the aquatic environment. The IFCB uses a combination of flow cytometric and video technology to capture high resolution images of suspended particles. Laser- induced fluorescence and light scattering from individual particles are measured and used to trigger targeted image acquisition; the optical and image data are then transmitted to shore in real time.Collected images during continuous monitoring can be processed externally with automated image classification software. Images can be classified to the genus or even species level with demonstrated accuracy comparable to that of human experts.

The IFCB will provide new strategic capabilities to obtain measurements of phytoplankton community composition that will be important to support products derived from the upcoming NASA Plankton, Atmosphere, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission set to launch in early 2024. Phytoplankton measurements to a biological and taxonomic level will allow for the development and validation of algorithms that derive phytoplankton community composition from ocean color data that are currently or will be developed in the future. In combination with existing instrumentation in the laboratory, we will provide products that include the full size spectrum and high resolution taxonomy of phytoplankton in any aquatic environment.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs

The IFCB would provide the following capabilities:

Collection of high resolution (~2.7 pixels/micron) images of suspended particles and living plankton in the size range <10 to 150 μm.

Continuous sampling at a rate of 15ml of sea water per hour.

Generation of up to 30,000 high resolution images per hour.

Submersible up to 40m.

Compact and portable design for in-lab and field research applications.

Procurement of both the PSICAM and QFT-ICAM include the following:

Instrument Shipping case Calibration beads and tool box Two years of spare parts Bench power supply Two-year extended warranty Freight charges

3. Place of Performance Ocean Ecology Laboratories at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.

4. Period of Performance The IFCB will be ordered after the Purchase Request is approved. The instrument will be shipped approximately 6-8 months after receipt of the order.
