STATEMENT OF WORK FORMAT
Purchase of 1 EM27/Sun Instrument
PR: 4200816998
Background The Chesapeake Bay is a dynamic natural laboratory built upon a unique, interconnected system of aquatic, terrestrial, and urban environments. Understanding these systems and how they are responding to climate change cuts across NASA Earth Science research (e.g. Ocean Biology and Biogeochemistry, Terrestrial Ecology, Atmospheric Composition, Carbon Monitoring System) and applications (e.g. Ecological Forecasting, Water Resources, Health and Air Quality) programs. Despite this importance, the Bay and surrounding regions are highly heterogeneous and can be challenging to observe from current satellites. NASA is working to expanding the calibration/validation opportunities in this region in collaboration with several local universities. This work directly support the GeoCarb mission by providing high quality measurements of column greenhouse gas concentrations at GSFC, which can be used to support calibration against existing cal/val network standards and intercalibration of instruments deployed at field sites in Virginia and North Carolina.
Scope This work requires the purchase of 1 Bruker EM27/Sun, which will be located at GSFC. The EM27/Sun instruments are ground-based Fourier Transform Spectrometers that are currently being used by collaborators at several universities to support cal/val of OCO and GeoCarb satellite data. An international network of these instruments called COCCON (COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network, https://www.imk-asf.kit.edu/english/COCCON.php) provides support for retrievals and easy-to-use, publicly available software that can be used by students.
